ABCs of Toothbrushing

Teach your kids to love brushing! How, you may wonder? They key is to start early and make it fun. The sooner your child is adapted to having their mouth cleaned – the more they’ll like it and continue with good oral care habits.

The Keys To Brushing:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

The Correct Way To Brush:

  • Place the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth or in small circular (tooth-wide) strokes.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

The Journey To A Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

A. Newborn – 2 Years Old

Start by washing or wiping your babies mouth regularly to remove milk residue. This helps to cleanse and remove bacteria and is enhanced by using a mouth/tooth tissue that is enhanced with xylitol. Once teeth start to erupt, you need to brush them with either a silicone toothbrush or a baby toothbrush with soft bristles.

B. 3-5 Years Old

Begin to train your child how to hold the toothbrush properly, how to spit effectively, and rinse with water. This stage can be frustrating if no oral care was introduced before now, children may resist your efforts to brush their teeth. If so, then brush your teeth with them. Allow your child to brush your teeth, and in return ask if you can brush their teeth.

It may take some time but eventually, they will catch on and want to do it “all by themselves” without any help from you. But you must still monitor their efforts. Just make it fun by offering a non food treat, like stickers.

C. 5-10 Years Old

There should be an established routine of brushing and flossing. If not, get started, and seek the advice of your dental professional. Continue to monitor your child’s brushing for effectiveness. Look for plaque left on the teeth at the gum line or in between the teeth.

D. 10 Years and Older

Keep up the good work. Address issues as they arise, and monitor symptoms of them slacking in oral health care, like bad breath, staining, or cavities. Remember to visit your dentist TWICE a year!
